The world is advancing at an exponential rate. The first iPhone came out just 15 years ago and the first Tesla went on sale almost 10 years ago. We’ve come a long way since then, and Porsche is not exempt from this. Just 10 years ago, Porsche GT cars were manual only, and the fastest 911 Turbo only made 530 hp. It was also just 10 years ago when the Porsche Panamera went on sale.
When it was first shown to the public, it was a rather acquired taste. It looked very awkward, and it was the first time a 4 door sedan had rolled out of Zuffenhausen; scary times. But I think it’s safe to say that the Panamera has established itself as a proper addition to the Porsche fleet. The Panamera now, is a very respectable sport sedan. It’s good looking, comfortable, practical, and pretty fast too; enough to strike fear into the hearts of BMW M5s and Mercedes E63 AMGs. But as nice as it is, I personally don’t see it as having much of a future, and it really sucks.
Just think about it for a second. Electric vehicles are the future. And it’s only a matter of time before all automakers (including Porsche) electrify their fleets; we are already seeing this with the Taycan. It’s also just a matter of time when these new, electric vehicles start to replace their gas-powered and hybrid siblings. The Porsche Taycan is a mid size, electric luxury sedan. The Porsche Panamera is a mid-size gas powered luxury sedan. See where I’m going now?
The Taycan is nowhere near done growing. The RWD base model has yet to make it into the international market, and the Taycan wagon (dubbed the Taycan Cross Turismo) is just months away from being revealed. I just don’t see how the Panamera can keep up for much longer.
Now it’s not going to be gone too soon, we know that for a fact. As Porsche R&D Boss, Michael Steiner said, “The Panamera platform is not old, it debuted in 2016. We still have a lot of ideas for it in terms of infotainment and connectivity. But there is currently no plan to replace this platform, instead, we want to keep it fresh and attractive as long as possible.”
Personally, I see it going two ways. First, the Panamera continues for another generation and the Porsche calls it quits. The second way (and I really hope they do this) is that the the Panamera itself gets replaced by the Taycan, but the platform stays and is instead reborn as a 2 door, front engined sports car aka, a new Porsche 928. There’s been rumors of a reborn 928 for years now, and I can’t think of a better time to bring back this once iconic name. But who knows? Maybe the Panamera will continue on, unfazed by the Taycan, it’s just a guessing game at this point.

Great article as usual,I personally think the idea of bringing back 928 is excellent and would put Porsche back in the news.
